Visions for Renton city

“Renton is a uniquely beautiful city, and we must work together to address the issues that impact each resident’s daily life. The challenges of increasing demographic diversity demand a comprehensive and adaptable plan.

As criminal activity is increasing, we need a strong and skilled leader to seek long-term solutions. After my work with the US Military in Iraq during the war and surviving a deadly terrorist ambush that killed 12 in my convoy, I understand the importance of everyone’s life. Safety is my top priority, and I will strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and our residents, achieve long-term public safety, and systematically reduce crime.

My second priority is to boost our economic recovery. As a small business owner, I acutely felt the struggle to survive this pandemic. As we reopen and rebuild, my informed city governance will foster growth, enable efficient hiring, and spur investment in our diverse businesses.

How have you already been volunteering or serving in the city?

I am serving in several ways. Currently, I am volunteering as a civil service commissioner to the Renton Regional Fire Authority.  I am also fortunate to have helped many Nepalese people living here in Renton and Bellevue for over seven years.

Previously, I worked as a civil contractor with the US Military in a war zone in Iraq from 2005 to 2007. Though my hours were high and wages low–84 hours a week for just $500 a month, I look back on this service as a kind of volunteering as I feel it is my life’s blessing to have served the US military in Iraq; I understand the risk each soldier endures to make sure we are safe here in the United States. In my hometown in Nepal in 2004, I was an appointee council member. All my experiences volunteering for my various communities and the dangerous situations I have faced helping me understand the importance of every human life and add to my belief in the karma of helping others.

What do you hope to accomplish as a city council member?

I will listen and respond to the issues and concerns of each Renton citizen. I will strive to create a safe and vibrant community. I will improve transparency and explore adopting new technologies for easier communication with residents to encourage involvement in community issues and planning.

In our continually growing, evolving, diverse city, a comprehensive and adaptable plan needs savvy, caring leaders as well as consistent input and insight from a broad spectrum of residents. Of course, we cannot expect every citizen to attend every public meeting, so we need to reach out in different and convenient ways. This approach has an added benefit in that it will help address the underrepresentation of people of color in our public meetings.

I would like to continue growing the city and help our great, active citizens have a lasting positive influence in our community. I will do my utmost to apply my knowledge and experience for the benefit of all.
